Two weeks ago, in episode 172, I told you the story of Cerrone and how Eurodisco started rising alongside its American counterpart. We can clearly distinguish the two today, with the benefit of hindsight and a few obvious sonic markers, but back in 1975 and 1976, that line wasn’t so clear.

Only a handful of people were really paying attention to these shifts: music journalists and early disco insiders like Tom Moulton (writing for Billboard) and Vince Aletti (in Record World) were among the first to describe a ā€œFrench soundā€ or ā€œGerman soundā€ taking shape, in contrast to what was happening in the U.S.

But that raises a bigger question: What was happening in the U.S.? How was disco evolving in those early years? What did the scene sound like, and what did it take to get a hit?
